Basketmaking – plaited paper baskets

Basketmaking – plaited paper baskets

Friday 10 May 2024.

West Dean London, Dilke House, 1 Malet Street, London, WC1E 7JN.

Using paper, explore how it can be used to make woven containers or baskets. With no experience required, the main technique of plaiting will be taught. Plaiting uses long, flat, flexible strands.

The strands are woven across one another to form first a base, then the sides. All designs will be based on a simple check-weave pattern.

To learn the technique, you will make a square based plaited basket to start with. The basket worked in two colours will provide the skills required to move on to make at least one more basket with variations of colour, pattern or dimensions. There will be the option to add in some strands of interest, with details added by the student in the form of drawing or writing.

This course is one of five individual courses with Mary Crabb during May and June, each exploring different textile and sculptural basketry techniques which may also be of interest.
